Just wondering. I want to major in Journalism, but I'd also like to experiment with the medical field. Is the a good major in college that I can possible minor in, or make a double major with along with Journalism? I don't want to go to medical school, but I'd like to get more experience with medicine and stuff.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

It would be very hard to do a double major with a medical field and Journalism. There are very few medical fields which offer minors. They want you to be fully competent when working in the field so they often require four of more years of college courses in the majors.

Some medical field majors (some of these require graduate degrees, but they do not require you to go to medical school)

- Speech Pathology (must get a masters)
- Audiology (must get a 3 year doctorate)
- Nursing (a 2 or 4 year program)
- Nutrition Sciences/Dietetics
- Physical Therapy (must get a doctorate)
- Physical Therapy Assistant (2 year associates program)
- Clincial Lab Sciences
- Advanced Medical Imaging (can get certified to do Sonography, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, etc)
- Medical Assisting

A lot of colleges offer something like Applied Health Science which isn't really specific to one particular medical field. Usually this degree is for certain medical fields like Physical Therapy, where now a doctorate is what you need but you start with an applies health science or some other type of bachelor's in the medical field and go on from there. Far as I know hope this is of some use and sorry for any typing errors.

Bottom line man, you must have all the pre-reqs, no matter what your major is. Some pre reqs - one year gen. chem, one year organic chem, calc based physics 1&2, one year history and English... You also stated that it doesn't matter the major. This is true - but I can tell you flat out, med schools want a science major over others. I chose a BS in Chemistry and did not have trouble with acceptance like some of my other friends did. Listing pre med in the search is needed, or atleast I would think, because then collegeboard would show the colleges who have the courses you need to fulfill your prereqs for medical school.

Well, any major in the medical field probably wouldn't mesh well with journalism (an "easier" major). Chemistry, biochem, bio-engineering, biochem engineering, etc. These will also get you jobs in the medical field without being an actual doctor.

The only thing I can come up with is the field of Nursing. Maybe you could be a correspondent for hospitals who put out press releases and stuff.

There's nursing- you kind of really have to want to be a nurse, though. It's rewarding, but very involved.

Medical technology- laboratory work at a hospital. Usually a 4+1 with one extra year at a certification school.

Talk to a counselor.
