Without more details it's hard to say. Unfortunately, a lot of orders come from the carpet pad themselves and it makes it very difficult to get rid of those odors. Replacing just the pad and having the carpet cleaned will help a lot for a more permanent fix. A quick fix tho can be to sprinkle baking powder on the carpet then vacuuming it up.

The best way is to remove the foul carpet, thorougly scrub the floor beneath with a bleach solution (without getting sub floor sopping wet, if it's plywood, chipboard or wood underlayment,) allow it to dry thoroughly, paint with Kilz (or a similar product) and then lay new carpet. Chances are it's not just the carpet, but also the floor beneath the carpet that holds the smell.

It is according to what smell you have. A professional carpet cleaning service would be best. First try sprinkling baking soda dry on it and vacuuming it up. If that doesn't work try vinegar and water and blotting it on the smelly area. Then try hiding charcoal and letting that stay for a day. Charcoal will absorb the smell.

steam clean or shampoo well, then use Febreze.

If it is a pet odor, use enzyme product designed for that. If it is mildew, make sure the carpet is completely dry and if possible expose it to sunlight. You may need to replace the padding.

Try Scrubbing Bubbles! Spray the whole area, leave for a couple minutes, then take a hot damp cloth and wipe back and forth. Repeat if necessary... I have used this product many times on my carpet after my mom-in-law told me to try it and it gets spots (and smells) out like nobody's business!!! Good luck...

Buy a large box of baking soda. Spread it all over the carpet and let it sit there
for a few hours. Vacum up.

You need to get a professional steamer and have them clean your carpets. Or maybe its in the pad and you need to rip the carpet up and change the pad.
