what is the process for being sworn after this time lapse? He wants now to practice law in the state of Illinois. Thanks!

Each state has a different process. He should contact the Illinois state bar, tell them his situation, and ask how to go about getting sworn in.

He may have to pay back dues, or he may have to take the bar again because of the lapse.

I know that if I end up passing the bar (took California in July), I'm going to make sure my dues are always paid, even if I go inactive, because I never want to sit for the California bar again.

I'm sure since he went through 4 years or more of law school, studied endlessly and sat for the bar exam, HE should know the answer to that question.

If he doesn't, have him contact a lawyer. - Sheesh!
