Libertarianism favors free markets and less government oversight, and less taxation, all subjects that real republicans (not GWBush clones) hold dear.
They differ from republicans though on their social issues, because they favor little to no oversight in personal issues, drugs, abortion, marriage, etc.
If people actually knew more about Libertarians, I think they'd be the biggest party... but alas, the table has only been set for two.

Because under both camps, there was a desire for smaller government with less regulation.
Old school conservatives were for smaller federal government, minimal taxes and entitlements, and less government regulation of businesses. These ideals are also shared by libertarians.
Where the two camps diverge is that conservatives also want to "promote domestic Tranquility" (as per the Constitution), which requires more regulations governing personal behavior, gaining tranquility through conformity.
Libertarians prefer to "ensure the blessings of Liberty" and object to regulations governing personal behavior, believing that tranquility will take care of itself in the long term if people are free and happy.

All Libertarians are considered ideologically conservative.
not all conservatives are Libertarian.
Conservatives value less government,
Libertarians value LEAST government, bordering on no government.
