Ahh,
Spreading freedom & democracy throughout the world,
while here at home, the reich-wing is busy instituting
gestappo-esque measures to make sure we are all "safe".
Fear, the ultimate conformer!
I wish I could move to Canada!

Not quite. The law actually has two components.

One, it does allow people to get a national non-drivers ID, comparable to a state non-drivers ID card.

Two, it requires any state-issued ID cards to contain certain information readable by an electronic scanning system. This could be a mag-strip reader, like most licenses already have, though some discussions have included potentially RDIF (radio tags) embedded in the license (like Mobil SpeedPass).

The goal is for law enforcement to be able to quickly verify the accuracy of any ID card.

I'm pretty paranoid about the government but I've never understood how a national ID was a tool of oppression. Your SSN is already a defacto ID number anyway and nothing bad has happened.

Our military used them for years, whats the big deal about having a national I D card, maybe it'll help stop voter fraud also, did you know its harder to rent a movie at blockbuster in GA than it is to vote?
