Usually the males are larger and more brightly colored and have longer more pointed dorsal and anal fins. Some of the Tanganyikan cichlids are identical in coloration, but the females are larger than the males.

In some South American species (like oscars) it is almost impossible to tell unless you "vent" them. (this means turning them upside down and looking at the vent area where the eggs and/or sperm (milt) comes out. The females are rounded and the males are pointed. Do not attempt this unless you have someone experienced there to help. Fish can be damaged by handling them.
