Dell is no good without the service warranties. That's the only thing I liked about Dell, the warranty coverage. Which is good if you cannot afford to have a system down for more than a day.
The desktops are ok, but also it depends on what you do. I have several Dell dimensions in the office and they've been running ok. However, I don't have high reviews for the laptops. Had 1 and it's crap. I have several IBM and VAIO, 5 years and still running.
With the cost of computers nowadays, if you know a little bit here and there, I would suggest on a no brand name with greater discount. If you will be totally dependent on Technical Support, get Dell.

Excellent.
I've got a 2 year old PC now and it's going ok. I decided to upgrade the RAM myself this year. I'd therefor (in my experience) recommend that you check out what further upgrade options for the PC you choose.
You may load it with 512 of RAM and then you can only take it to 1G... which isn't exactly future-proof!
I like the PC, it was very reasonably priced too, I've been able to get patches and upgrades with no problems. The only complaint is that once a year I get a call from their sales department but I can handle it.
Happy shopping!

I've had my Dell PIII B866 for 6 years now, and it's still going strong. I've upgraded almost everything in it, but only because I wanted higher end componants that became available after I bought it.
I did have a problem with the graphics card shortly after I got it, but they overnighted a new one to me for free, and included the postage to return the bad one.
I love my Dell, and I wouldn't buy another off-the-shelf from anyone. My next computer will probably be the one that I build.

I used to work for a company in which we only tech'ed Dell laptops. Simply, they're pretty hit-or-miss. We had some pople in the company coming to us every other week with a new problem, and some people we never saw. I have to say that their premium warranty service is great. Where else will "act of God" get you a new, free laptop?

I have owned a Dell computer for a few years now. A dimension 8300. I have nothing but praise for the machine, I do however think that their help desk has slipped a little.

I used to work for them. The hardware is junk. Laptops overheat and components fail the desktops are the same and very vunerable to changes in mains power supply levels. Get a hp they are great I have one of the laptops I used and abuse and it takes it all!
