A simple explanation of the term would be, artist types, non conformists, beat- niks (50's) hippies (60's), or if you must starving artists.

I first asked this question when I encountered the Black Blooded Bohemians at a Renaissance Faire. Yep, Gypsy in nature but it's also a throw-back to the 60s when they needed a hip new phrase to describe someone who as "in" as opposed to "out". Willingness to experience life and love. Unwillingness to be tied to conventions. Drifting like the wind but with that cool, hip walk.

Gypsy: a member of a people with dark skin and hair who speak Romany and who traditionally live by seasonal work and fortunetelling; they are believed to have originated in northern India but now are living on all continents (but mostly in Europe, North Africa, and North America)

Moden use is to denote people who move about a lot and have little or no roots.
