Basically, treble clef notes are notes that start from middle C upwards. A guitar has notes that are below middle C and thus needs bass clef notes as well.

The "G" or treble clef is the musical notation most people are familiar with. By convention, this is the clef used used to teach guitar. However, to do this, all guitar notes are "boosted" one octave.

There are two "C" notes when beginning guitar. First fret, 2nd string is one; third fret, fifth string is another. When learning guitar, first fret, 2nd string is notated using the second space from the top on the treble clef. In actuality, though, this note on the guitar is really MIDDLE C, or the first ledger line below the treble clef.

So ... when you learn the guitar, you will use the treble clef ... but all the notes have been transposed one octave. Don't worry much about this. But if you ever play with a piano, know that HIS middle 'C' (which is always right - the piano is never transposed), is not YOUR middle 'C'.
