I went to the Emergency Room 2 days ago for dehydration and was given an IV. I left the hospital but I have no appetite and no desire for water, but I am still drinking and eating because I know I need to. Is it normal to have a loss of appetite? Will it take a few days to get back to normal?

The appetite loss is normal. But please do keep drinking fluids!! Water especially!!! A sports drink might be helpful, so your electrolytes stay fairly balanced.
If you don't eat, try a liquid nutritional supplement so you get some vitamins & minerals & such.

Good Luck!!

Actually, instead of water, you need to drink something with electrolytes in it like Gatorade or powerade or even pediatric re-hydration solution. You can actually get dehydrated drinking water because your body also needs the sodium and potassium and other electrolytes.

And after being sick, it is totally normal for your appetite to be off for a few days even up to a week. Feel better!!!

thats normal
when you get dehydrated, especially to the point where you need an IV, your body starts to shut down. Anything non-essential like hunger turns itself off.
Just keep drinking lots of water, and eat lightly. You will go back to normal in a couple days.
If not, see a doctor.

Yes it's normal. The question is, what caused the dehydration in the first place. That's danderous stuff, ecpecially this time of summer. Drink water, soda, cool aid, anything. KEEP DRINKING FLUIDS. Preferrable water, but those other things have plenty of water in them too.

It is normal for some, so is nausea and vomitting. It will probably just take a few days for your body to fully recover depending on how badly you were dehydrated. Although they probably told you to stick to water, maybe you could try a Crystal Lite lemonade or a vitamin flavor water.. so that you weren't just stuck w/ plain water. Whatever you choose though, avoid sugar and colorings.. :)

Hi Caitlin-so sorry to hear you had to go to ER for dehydration. Try and drink water if you can, or juice-really anything liquid will help. You mentioned you're not eating either. That truly bothers me that you aren't drinking or eating anything. Do you suppose it has anything to do w/this hot spell we're having? Do you work outside? Or is there something that's upset you lately?

Try and eat fruit-watermelon, cantaloupe and peaches are good for you and they have lots of fruit juice in them. Could you eat fruit? Any kind: apples, kiwi, bing cherries, oranges-have I hit on something that strikes your fancy? I hope so.

Try and eat something, hon. Soon, once you get alittle something in your tummy, you will start feeling like eating more.
Let me know how you're doing K?

When I was admitted to the hospital for dehydration, I was also given IV fluids. When I was discharged they told me to drink Gatorade or Pedi-a-Lite. Both contain all your electrolytes.

I was also told to eat Campbell's Tomato Soup as it is loaded with potassium and sodium. You need the potassium to regulater your heartbeat, too little or too much of it could stop your heart. The sodium was to help you retain the fluids.

When you dehydrate your level of homeostasis is out of balance. Loosing your appetite is normal. If you are having trouble drinking liquids, buy some pedialite pops for kids. Just stick with those and the b.r.a.t. diet....banana's rice, apple sauce and toast. The pedialite pops with even out your electrolytes. Good luck.

Yes this is quite normal, but for the time being, wherever I went I would have a bottle of water, crystal light, something to refuel yourself, gatorade can help balance the electolytes your body has lost being dehydrated.
