It depends on what you have to buy. If parents are buying clothes and food and some of the fun stuff (like family outings and activities), then all the 15-year-old has to buy is the fun stuff. Then the allowance can be like $20 a month. If a kid has to pay for his own clothes, then I would say $20 a week. But anyway, 15 is not too young to get a job doing things like mowing lawns, babysitting, and helping around the house. I would make my kids work for their money not just get rewarded with allowance--it helps them when they get a real job later.

I think $10 a week is fine. If they want expensive clothes they can save up their allowence. My son is going to be 2 this week and all of my loose change goes into a bank for him and when I get $50 it goes into a CD account that my parents set up for him when he was born. He will get $5 and the other $5 will go into the bank, and part of any money he gets for holidays or b-days will go into that account also. When he turns 18 the money is his to do so what he wants, like getting a car, using it for college, etc. And if they are driving they need to have a job to pay for their own insurance and gas. Just handing a car over is not a good idea because they tend to not take care of it like they would if they have to pay for it themselves. Most towns now have good bus systems..even in the little podunk town I live in!

$5-10 its enough to go out on the weekends at a safe place to have fun with friends. Not enough to buy a lot of drugs (know people who do them i dont myself) At 19 years old i get $20 every few weeks (like once a month) but thats because I am more responsible with my money

There is no proper amount.
What chores do you have? Do you spontaneously help at home?
Do you pay for school lunches or bus fare? Can your parents afford to pay an allowance?
All these things must be taken into consideration before calculating an exact amount.

Maybe 10 dollars a weeks. I mean that is 40 a month! Really that might be too much! It depends on how many chores your child does. Make him work for his money and he will be more grateful for the things you buy for him. Keep track of his money, make him save it or buy things he needs. THis will only prepare him for the real world.

Think of all the things that they usually ask you for and what you're going to allow them to do, and give them an allowance accordingly.. this will also teach them to be responsible about money.
Do you give them money for lunch?
Do you allow them to go to the movies once a week?
Do you buy them an article of clothing once a week?
Add all this up, and on Monday morning, give them the total amount. Tell them that this money is going to pay for their lunches all week, their movie on Friday, the shirt they like to get.. and when it's gone.. it's gone.. If Thursday morning comes and they don't have their money for lunch, tell them to make one.
They will become responsible with their money, and they will learn to be more thrifty.

I never got allowance. So, I would say nothing. Unless he is out there cutting the grass every week or doing something to keep the house clean (other than clean his room) then he doesn't deserve allowance. If he did cut the grass... I don't know... maybe like 10 dollars??
