You mean a computer network, right? Well, networking is when two or more computers are connected together either through wired or wireless equipment. When two or more computers are connected together they can "communicate" with each other, which is why it is called "networking". The term Networking comes from two or more intities combined together and communicating on a regular basis or for a select single event. A business with employees has an employee network. A family is a family network. If two or more employees get together on a single project they are "networking" that project. If two or more family members get together for a single project they are networking that project, like putting together a family reunion or a vacation trip.

A computer network, private or public or the older terms closed or open, is simple two or more computers connected together and communicating. The public network or open network is called the WWW or World Wide Web or better known as the Internet. This is where computers all over the world, through broadband connections can communicate with each other. One computer can connect with another on the Web or Internet and download files, programs, photos, music, videos, etc, from one to the other. They can also communicate via e-mail or instant messaging programs on each computer.

A private network or the older term closed network is when two or more computers in the same geographic area are connected to each other and communicate with each other. This network lies within the internet, as the internet is all around them, via broadband. This private network can send and receive files, photos, programs, music, etc, from one computer to another and share resourses like printers, fax, etc. This network does not have a broadband connection to the Internet and is thus "private". A private network can also have what is called an Intranet. An Intranet is a collection of websites on individual computers which the ohter members of the network can browse and visit, also downloading items. This private network also has the ability to send e-mail and instant messages to other computers on the private network.

The private network can gain access to the public network or the WWW, or World Wide Web, via a broadband or dialup connection. This allows the private network to become a part of the public network for however long the network users wish to maintain that connection. A dialup connection allows for disconnecting from the internet at any time. A Broadband connection is considered "always on", or "always connected". This does not mean they are always left wide open to any computer wishing to connect to the private network. The use of Internet Security Suites and FireWalls allows private networks to keep the general public out of the network. Those who do not take such security measures are basically wide open to the entire WWW. Other security measures are embedded in browsers which open to the Internet. Once upon a time anyone could just institute a download to any computer connected to the Internet, which posed a huge security risk as there are evil doers who sent viruses and other nasties to comptures. These types are boren and mean spirited people with nothing better to do with their miserable lives than make others as miserable as they were.

So, this is the basics of what a "Private" network and the "public" network is. I hope this helped clarify the issue and you have a great day.
