The Knights Templar were a group of nobles who were charged with protecting the route to the Holy Land. They are rumored to have found the original temple of Solomon, which is where they got their name. As far as what they are known for, that's a bit sketchy.
Claims include that they actually had better relations with the Muslims than anyone else. They have been credited with developing modern banking. They have been blamed for all sorts of obscene practices. It's been claimed that they were all gay. It's been said that their remnants founded the Masons. Some even say that the Shroud of Turin is actually the body of the Grand Master when the Templars were destroyed.
Really, you'll have to do a little research, because there are as many theories about them as there are people to make them.

First, the Templars did not discover the Temple of Solomon. The temple had been destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar 1500 years earlier. The location of the Temple grounds was known, however and after the conquest of Jerusalem in the 2nd Crusade (I think or possibly the 3rd) eight knights were given the task of protecting the holy site.
It was only later that they grew sufficiently numerous and powerful to extend their protection to the pilgrim routes, a job that had already been 'baggsed' by the Knight's of the Hospital of St John (The Hospitalers), who weren't best pleased.
Attending a crusade gave you an automatic 'free pass' to heaven; later giving money, land or gifts to an organisation that crusaded gave the same result so many rich people gave to the Templars and the Hospitalers rather than get killed in Palestine.
Eventually the Templars, who put all their wealth into land or banking controlled 1/3rd of the land in Europe and any banking that wasn't controlled by Jewry. This was clearly unacceptable to the Pope and, especially the King of France.
They got together and arranged for all Templars to be arrested on a particular day. Their goods were seized and parcelled out amongst the Pope and Nobles who had supported the seizure and many of the Templars were burned at the stake for heretical beliefs that they were tortured into confessing.
Much treasure was thought to have been secreted away and not found even through torture. Some of the higher officers of the Templars escaped to England (which was already on a collision course with the Pope) and eventually settled in Scotland where they manifested as the Sinclair clan.
Their miniature temple in Scotland, seen near the end the recent Da Vinci Code film has been the centre of speculation since it was built. Although the Templars shared a lot of symbolism with the Freemasons and many high-placed individuals were members of both organisations they were not the same.

The Knights Templar were the most famous medieval military Order. Was founded at Jerusalem at 1120 and recieved the Popes recognition 9 years later. They were famous to be skilled and fearless warriors, "the first to go in battle and the last to leave". They played a major role to the defence of Christendom at the Holly Land.

In 1119 nine French knights bound themselves to protect pilgrims on their way to the holy places and too monastic vows.
They were named templars because they had their HQ at the site of an the old Temple of Solomon at Jerusalem.
Their bravery in the field was unquestionable as, in due course, was the wealth and power of the Order.
Though suppressed and extinct within continental Europe they found a temple near Holborn Bars in London c.1121.
They are remain members of a religious and military order.

the templar knights were a seccular order of knights.
This meant that they were clergy who were allowed to fight the moors in the crusades. A lot of myth hangs around their order but probably the best way to describe them is as a bunch of religious fanatics who commited some of the greatest attrocities known to man in the name of god(if you've seen the movie Kingdom of heaven you'll get a pretty accurate image). After the
crusades they had become a very wealthy and powerfull order. This caught the eyes of the popes. And in the early 15th century there order was banned and a little later they were all executed and their properties confiscated by the vatican who was in dire need of funds (goes to show that our history wasn't all happily ever after stories.)

Try reading the blood and the holy grail.
The knights templar according to this were basically a form of free masons, who believe that John the Baptist was the son of god, and not Jesus.
