Yes, although it will work for a while, the dryer also acts as a filter, if your compressor failed... chances are there are plenty of metal shavings in there just waiting to destroy your new compressor. Spend the extra now while the system is opened and uncharged, it will just cost you more later when the new compressor fails 1 week when it's warranty expires !

Most companies will not warranty the compressor if you do not change every thing.
