Ok, supposedly ultrasounds done in the second trimester can have a 2 week error. But what if the date on my ultrasound (gestation age) says +/- 6 days. Should I trust that it's around 6 days rather than 2 wks?

The plus or minus will vary depending how far along you are in the 2nd trimester (or any stage of your pregancy). If you were only 17 weeks, the plus or minus will be less than an estimate at 25 weeks. The computer which gives the estimated due date will give an accurate plus or minus, depending on how far along you are. For example, at 35 weeks, the plus or inus can be as much as 16-18 days.

Your earliest ultrasound is usually considered the most accurate for dating. Ultrasound accuracy at 5 weeks is around +/- 4 days. However, at 40 weeks it is +/- 2.2 weeks. Your doctor may do differently, but we do not keep changing the due date with each ultrasound exam.

Consider this: Two babies conceived on the same day. Born on the same day. Both healthy. One is 5 pounds and the other is 10. Genetics.
But at 5 weeks, they are all about 4 or 5 mm in length.

I wouldn't take the ultrasound date as a firm date in the 2nd trimester. I would continue to use your EDD as a planning date. Sometimes the dates change but one can never tell when a baby will come...nature will take its course and the baby will be born when it is ready. Remember...these dates are only ESTIMATES! Good luck with the remainder of your pregnancy!

I think that the ultrasounds are very reliable. The thing is, it is based on the babies size, and that can be faulty if your family is unusually large/small. Also, it doesn't matter a great deal because the baby will come when its ready :)
