What a short note with your sympathies. If you knew the mother, perhaps a short sentence or two on a quality you liked about her. Just write what's in your heart & keep it short. It also never hurts to follow up with a call several weeks later. People always forget quickly & friends, close or not, could use a kind word or a cup of coffee after all the flurry of making arrangments & burial are done.

DO NOT WRITE I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. Even if you have been in the same situation you do not know that persons relationship other than what is show and grief really makes that comment stab some people. Because they feel no one could understand their degree of pain. Simple write I am sorry for your lose. You can include if you need anything I am here for you but don't write it unless you mean it. I find visiting families a few days after the funeral helps because that is when they become lonely and no one is around.

Thinking of you. or thoughts of you in my prayers, deepest sympathy. Or.... go over and help them get done the things that are too hard to do with company coming and going (like cutting the grass - weeding the garden)
This is a time you don't want to say anything silly, like she's in peace now, or she's one of god's angels you know silly things that make them roll their eyes

Simply write "My deepest sympathies to you on the loss of your wonderful mother. You're in my thoughts and prayers".
