I would say try to find some middle ground. A sudden change in appearance not only shocks a parent, but is usually a sign a kid's in trouble. Are there some minor things she might consider, like a bit of color to your hair or some minimal accesories? Do yourself a favor and involve her in your choices. Maybe she'd enjoy a day of dress up with you. Some temporary hair color or something. The dress doesn't make the person. Pick your battles carefully.

Wow thats really weird for your mom to react like that. Im not emo myself so I cant really say what you should do to make this transition any easier. Is it just your clothes, make up and hair that you want to change? Or is it the personalilty type thing? Either way just try to sit down with your mom and tell you that maybe you dont fit the normal teenage mode and this is what makes you more comfortable. But when you do make the change..do it slowly..dont just spring it out there. Good Luck.

I think you have a more important question to ask - why would my mother do that for changing my style of appearance? That is not acceptable behavior for a parent.

As for your current question, the best way to tell her is to simplify it as much as possible. Tell her it is just an aesthetic. Would she be upset if you wore something from her childhood that is uncommon now? Just because it is different then the norm, what seperates a poodle skirt from a lip ring? Challenge her about the nature of social norms of dress and their meanings - they really don't have any! If people were not around, would a skirt have a different meaning than a pair of pants? Try to explain that this is the equivalent of painting a picture, except on yourself. One likes pretty things to see around them. It is natural to want to see yourself as pretty.

Are you just going to dress Emo, or become emo. Emo people are lame. And u shouldn't become one cause theyre all depressed. no matter your personality, society looks down upon teens who dress like that. Do you really want to be looked down upon because of how you look?

Do you mean that you want to be an emancipated Minor? You have to be able to prove to the court that you are mature and responsible enough to be able to support yourself, while staying in school. They will not just tell you that are are free to do whatever you want. You have to be able to hold a job, and pay rent
