I have a 54 MBPs likksys wireless router hooked up to a cable modem. The speed jumps up and down between 11 mbps and 54mbps. Sometimes is is too slow to deal with.

The computer is about 20 feet away from the router. There are no walls between them.

i tried all 11 channels.

What else can I do?

The cable connection has NO effect on how fast the connection is between my router and my computer!

That happened to me before. All I did was update the wireless router's driver file. I got it from the internet, in the manufacturer's website. Try it.

Since the computer is only 20 feet away from the source, your speed problem is probably due to your cable connection speed. Cable broadband speed depends on the number of users online in your neighborhood. If you are surfing the web during busy hours, your speed will go up and down depending on traffic. It's probably not your router. Why don't you try to hook up your computer with a ethernet cable and see if the problem goes away? If the speed is constant with a cable, then you should get new router/adapter.

Serenity is right.

Listen, the reason is very simple why your speed jumps up and down. You are using a cable connection. A cable connection shares the broadband in the entire neighborhood which is on the same cable line. As more people access the net the slower the connection gets for everyone sharing it. The less people on at one time the faster the connection will be.

If you don't like sharing the broadband with other cable subscribers change to ADSL. This seems to be a bit slower than cable, but it does not share with anybody else who subsribes to ADSL. So, you don't have the ups and downs in speed during the heavy or slow times of congestion during each day.

It is as simple as that. Cable broadband is shared amoung all those in the same neighborhood who also subsribe to cable. So, sometimes it is faster when fewer are Online, and other times it is faster when it is less congested with fewer subscribers Online.

Hope this helps, have a nice day.

Check and make sure you are using the correct power supply. Any "universal" power supply that might not have the correct setting could cause this. Also, turn the antennas (if there are two of them) so they are each 45 degrees away from center.

Also, Make sure you don't have a Cordless phone nearby. Sometimes they cause Interference.
