This infact is a classical example of successful salesmanship. Look how artisen she is that she can sell a thing which people can otherwise get for free.
The successful salesman is not the one who makes the customer buy some thing the customer walked in the store to purchase. The successful is the one who makes a customer purchase some thing they did not come to purchase.
Modern salesmanship techniques do teach you how you can sell ice cream in winters and sweaters in summer.
I would say she is a smart saleswoman if she can tell the customers that the sea shells picked bu her and the best and even if they roam around the whole length of shore, they wont find one which she is offering for just 5 bucks. SUCCESS!!!

Well obviously anyone who sells shells has cleaned and polished them, they are usually beach combers so they can find the good whole shells while you are still deciding whether you will get out of bed early or not...and many people make jewelry and other things from their "beach combing" if you have never seen a beautiful shell that has been polished and cleaned, then you do not know how good it can be to find them before the tourists get out of bed!
And when you take something that you find laying on the beach (free) and clean and polish it, and find them in unchipped GOOD condition then she can sell her shells because they are better than what is left by the time the people who just pick them up get to the beaches!

Ya know, I swear that Sally b****, picked up all the seashells because I haven't been able to find one in a loooong time. In fact, I might even buy one because it's just not the same going to the beach without bringing a shell home.

Sue gets up very early and gathers the best shells, then sells them to folks who don't get up that early. She is taking advantage of a niche market and is a very savvy businesswoman. She is providing a service that not all persons would want to do, but would like the rewards from!

Actually, she's pretty smart, if you think about it.
While some/most of us know that we can pick them up for free, others might not. She's taking advantage of the stupid people. I wouldn't mind making some quick cash like that.

Maybe she got out early and picked up all the shells. Supply and demand says if someone wants one and she is the only one with the shells; then they have to pay her for them.

if it was bad marketing she wouldn't be selling those sea shells by the sea shore, she'd be giving them away - and considering how long she has been selling those sea shells, she is practically genius! I wonder what her secret is...
