This was written by my friend who had his face blown off by a truck bomb when he was serving with the Army....he's been home about a year now. It's hautingly beautiful:

"I've been sitting here for almost 20 minutes now, not knowing what to write. Thinking about fantasies and hopes and dreams. But everything turns to shades of grey behind my eyes. Under the skin I am black and white within. To hope is to admit fear. So tired of the pain and anger and hate and regret that swirls so thickly through everyday of the world. Maybe I just miss it. The world of dust and steel that I had grown so accustomed to over last several years suddenly taken away from me. So used to holding a working piece of metal that could chew through cars, people, buildings in one hand and in the other, a fist full of candy to throw at smiling, yelling children with outstretched arms. Then and now, dreamily longing to smell the scent of another's hunger in the air. Warm bodies getting closer one comfortable move at a time. That electric touch that makes your back arch ever so slightly. The cool quiet velvet of night that you can never find when you're all alone..."

Obviously he's adjusting, it's not easy....

My uncle was stationed in Iraq, and he said it wasn't that bad, but he was in an area where there wasn't much fighting.

My brother feels very proud of the job he is able to do there. He has been over three times. I make sure to thank him for going, too.
