Hello, young person, Well reading the words frees your imagination to make your interpretation of the story.
Your own individual experience sees what no film maker can produce.
That is why so often a person will feel let down when they see the movie after reading the book because they interpreted the written word and enjoyed the experience.
I love movies as well but a book can consume you and illicit more emotions and well I can't get into alot here. Don't listen to your friends. literature is the most important part of a persons life it allows you to truly escape!

Your mind is challenged more. You get more educated by reading and like you said having to use your imagination. Education prepares you for the real world. Also most movies don't tell the whole story, because if they did they would have to be atleast four hours long. The book ususally has a lot more details in it that you miss when you watch the film. Even though the book is usually better than the movie, I am all for books being made into movies, even when the plot has been changed a bit. I never would have read some of the classics if I hadn't seen the great films first.

Reading books will improve your vocabulary and command of the language. You don't get that from movies, which are usually a condensed version of the book. Moreover, movies also tend to dumb down the book.
Movies have to edit out parts of books which cannot be translated into cinematic format. By this, I mean everything that can't be just shown, but must be explained, is taken out. Also, everything that can ruffle the audience's sensitivities is taken out. At other times, things that are not in the book are added in, because it plays better on the screen. For instance, the movie Troy is based on Homer's Iliad, yet it includes things like Achilles' first meeting with Hector, when the Greeks first reached Troy's shores. That isn't in the Iliad, but it helps establish the characters and the enmity between Hector and Achilles.

With books you can use you imagination and have the people look however you want. And the book has more detail so, the characters are better established and, you get to know them better. I learned this in HS when I read a Stephen King Book and then watched the movie. Also Flowers in the Attic was a good one for that as well

Your classmates are taking the easy way out as far as books go.
Reading books is great- you get more of the plots, character development and the writer can take you places that a movie can't (because of time, budget, etc).
Read the book first, then watch the movie. You will probably find out that you liked the book better than the movie.
Don't cheat yourself! Read books!

First of all, not all books are made into movies. Also, reading stimulates some imagination that movies cannot. Books usually have more detail and they require different thought process and interpretation. You can also read in public without disturbing others (no noise.) Furthermore, some directors do really crappy jobs of interpreting the book, and just watching to movie will cause the viewer to miss out on a great deal.

1) Movies often "dumb-down" a book to make it more accessible for audiences. You'll probably be getting a bastardized version of the author's actual plot. Not good.
2) Reading is a crucial skill that is required for 99% of college classes. By watching the movie you'll be sacrificing a chance to further your reading comprehension skills.
3) Reading is generally more difficult. A book will often use a more difficult syntax and vocabulary than you'll find in a movie script. Again this goes back to accessibility.
4) Reading causes you to use things like your imagination!

And do you think your teacher has no idea its a movie as well and not only that has most likely seen it and will more than likely ask you questions of the book that are not in the movie. I LOVE movies but I also like to read. A teacher will know when your just winging it and just giving a synopsis of the story but when you read it you can offer so much more so never sell yourself short.

Literacy is an important skill. Something you can't get from watching a flick. Plus so much detail is given in books that are overlooked or not protrayed in a movie. Also, you are subjected to the interpretation of the book by the director of the movie.

Your friends are dense ! Don't hang out with them ! if you have to, hope you can maintain a mind of your own , please !!! Books will be with you all the time. And yes, they tell the complete story , not like the movies---movies sensationalise everything....Books elaborate, detail and let you take your time in understanding and appreciate the great sentences .....and you can pause to think it over ... the only movie that matches a book is STAR WARS, the original. Other than that ..... BOOKS are better than movies !! Get real !!
