I've decided that the T is silent in Todd. So, from now on I'll just be Odd.

the "silent" letters are there to indicate nuance in pronouncing the word. They tend to direct which way the vowel should be pronouced.... ehy instead of ah etc.

There's generally a pattern as to which letters are silent and in what order though...

Many words in English have come from other languages.
Pronunciation has been retained in some cases.
