Time travel and self sacrifice. He allowed himself to be killed by the falling plane engine so that he wouldn't bring about the death of the girl he loved.
As already stated, it means different things to different people. I thought it was a great film.

brilliant question
I had to watch the film a few times to understand!
The rabbit saved his life by saving him from the plane falling into the house at the start by luring him to the road where he was asleep.
Then donnie shoots the rabbit dont he? So in the end, he died in the house, so I interpret that as Donnie changing his fate and not realising it.
You see the scene where Gary Jules was singing in the background? and it flicked between all the other people in the film, Donnie played or contributed something to their lives.
P.S Tears for Fears' Head over Heels is brilliant in this film, I had to download it onto my iPod

Right, the guy should of died at the start, but he didn't. This made the rabbit very angry. So he got the guy with the nasal voice to sing mad world by Tears for fears which reversed time because it's a very whinny song. thus oooooooooooooooeeeeeeeeee. the plane engine was really a metaphor for the fact that head and shoulders shampoo don't work cause when you stop using it the engine comes back at the end of the film.....See Dummy.

completely sh1t movie, no point to it, trying to be too clever at the end, but that only works if there is a point to it, like Fight club

pretty much been answered already but it was a kind of surreal way of seeing the next few days if he'd have survived the jet engine falling thru the house - as it was he got off ight - wierd but enjoyable - soundtrack was fab - remember xmas no 1 'mad world' from a couple of years back - from the film.

I took it as after the aircraft part crashed into his house - none of the rest in the movie actually happened. It's one of those great movies that keep one watching, guessing, thinking and talking about it.

He found a way to go back in time so he would be killed by a falling aircraft engine and never meet his girlfriend. That way, she got to live.
