When i'm phoning up to enquire the simplest things they all say "can I just take your name and address" or "WE NEED your postcode" or something like that, and I'm not sure if that's even legal?
If I refused I expect they'd say we can't help you then. I'm interested in whether or not they are allowed to ask for such info before I make a fuss about it on the phone.
Also do similar things happen to you? (sorry I had no idea what category to put this in but since i'm concerned about the info getting in the wrong hands or being used for unknown purposes I put it here)

it is legal and for marketing purposes , usually if you tell them you don't want to give them any personal info they will still help you . although some places won't take you seriously if you don't and refuse to give you any information on their product which is bad customer service in my opinion

they don't take the info to send stuff in the mail , they take it to see how well their product is selling in your area and if there a lot of inquires in your area

If your inquiry is about something you have bought, a service or such, for which they already have your name and address, they merely want it to confirm that you are who you say you are. No problem whatsoever. However, if the inquiry is not under those circumstances, give your next door neighbours name and address. There is nothing illegal in doing so. Saves a lot of bother. Finally, your name and address is already is many, many easily accessible places, such as the local public library, The Voters Register, The Telephone Directory, etc.....................

You don't have to give it out. It's unnecessary. They just want your information to add you to their database so they can send you marketing material and junk mail. Tell them you prefer not to give it out or give a fake one, like the address of the parliament buildings or Buckingham Palace.
