Generally, they are nerds who have way too much free time, no social life & have something against Bill Gates...

Macs don't usually have many viruses at all.

Most of the time, viruses are pieces of computer code (poorly written) to exploit a "bug" or mistake in the Operating System's software. The reason the pieces of code are called viruses is because they act in a way similar to a real virus. One example, a virus can infect (read) your address book then send out email automatically to all of your contacts, then the people who are in your contacts that get infected have the same thing happen to them... it continues until many unrelated people become infected. Also, an email server (holding place for emails) can become infected with a virus as well... and send out infected emails to everyone at the company (without prior knowledge of the company's users or domain name).

Most of the time these email virus are created from other infected computers who get the virus implanted in them from various malicious software they install on their computer. The virus takes your previous emails and sends messages to all the people on your address books. Thus your name and company is "known".

Sometimes virus software will send out random email and company names and variations of the names. Most of the time they miss but once in a while it is a valid name and company and thus someone like you wonder how...

Legitimate companies don't create viruses despite many people who claim they do so they can create anti-virus software. That is like saying doctors create disease to keep themselves in business. Not true. There are plenty of hackers and disgruntled programmers to do that.

Norton, McAfee, Microsoft...it is just another scam by big business to make you give them more money. When you install all of these "anti-virus" programs on your computer, you are required to register the product and provide an e-mail address in order to do that. They then pull all the names from your address book on that e-mail account and send a virus to all of them. If you have thier produt you are safe...otherwise, your computer crashes and you end up buying their product anyway to prevent further crashes. Antivirus and creating viruses is a multi-billion dollar industry.

It doesn't take rocket science to create a virus now a days they
have do it yourself kits on the dark side of the net if you know
where to look that will create the trojans/virus for script kiddies and unskilled attackers who have no programming knowledge at all.

The serious virus authors and attackers who know the dark arts and have advanced programming skills keep a low profile,
Their code isn't poorly written poorly written or full of mistakes.

It is usually not hard to guess a company's name. As for your name, they can use "brute force" in which they randomly match a first and last name and e-mail away hoping to get someone.

But usually, they get your name from someone else's address book. They write a virus which sends them all the names in an address book (and if it is a company's address book, you get everybody) and then e-mails itself on to them. They then sell the address book to other hackers, spammers, etc. at a penny a name or some such price.

Most likely it's some smart kid trying to show off how smart they are.It is a challenge for some, and if they get caught they get jobs in the I.T. sector so there is no real dis-incentives to stop them.
