What specific trait or understanding do you feel an artificial from of intelligence must acquire before it could achieve sentience

The ability to be able to create something outside of the parameters of its programming.

For example, paint a painting.
Seems simple right? But not if it was not told to, or had programming to say that it should.

To decide for itself to paint, (as an example), a picture.
Decide for itself what to paint.
Decide for itself what colors to use.
Decide for itself how big of a canvas, and what type of brushes to use.
Decide for itself the dimensions and the color mixes of the subject.
To create it's own illusion of a subject matter, without basically just making a photocopy of something it has already visually registered.

Self aware is existence beyond exacting input.

love/hate...it has to be both you cant figure out one extreme without the other..i believe what makes us human is the fact we can love/hate...Im not too sure other than being aware of yourself if there is anything else it must have to achieve sentience
