PC Cards (aka PCMCIA cards) are add-on hardware for your laptop. The name PC card and PCMCIA card are interchangeable and mean the same thing. PC stands for "Portable Computer Cards", PCMCIA stands for "Personal Computer Memory Card International Association".

For instance, if your laptop didn't come with a built in ethernet card, or phone modem, you can buy a PC card to add that functionality to your computer.

You'll only need one if your laptop doesn't have something you want/need it to have.

You do not NEED a pc card. If you want to add something that your laptop does not have (NIC, wireless, USB, etc), you can buy a PCMCIA card.
