-QUOTE-
Only one pair was still battling, apparently unaware of the new arrival. Harry saw Sirius duck Bellatrix's jet of red light: he was laughing at her.

'Come on, you can do better than that!' he yelled, his voice echoing around the cavernous room.

The second jet of light hit him squarely on the chest.

The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened in shock.

Harry released Neville ... as Dumbledore, too, turned towards the dais.

It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall: his body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backwards through the ragged veil hanging from the arch.

...

'There's nothing you can do, Harry ... nothing ... he's gone.'

tragically, Sirius is struck by a curse from the wand of his cousin, the Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange. He falls through a veil inside an arch in the Death Chamber of the Department of Mysteries, and vanishes.

Bellatrix cast a spell that caused him to fall through a magical veil, and he never came back out. Bellatrix's spell didn't kill him, it was going through the veil that finally finished it.

He was hit by Bellatrix's "red jet of light" (a stunning charm) and then fell backwards into The Veil, which I guess somehow kills people.

bellatrix lestrange blasts him through this arch that is covered by a curtain. i assume the curtain covered the entrance to the land of the dead or sumthing. because he never shows up again.

Bellatrix sent a spell at him and he fell through an archway which is like the archway to death or something.

JK Rowling didn't really explain it. Basically, he fell through a curtain. But, behind the curtain is death or something similar.
It's like there are lost souls behind it or something. She has said he won't come back.
