I have noticed this too. I live in a rural community and I know everyone within a 5 mile radius...I have friends that live in large cities that dont even know their neighbors. I think its because in a city you are around people all day long and so at the end of the day you really just want some privacy. So you dont try to get to know your neighbors and such. In a small town you can go all day and not talk to someone so people are seeking human connections. Conversely the privacy you think you have in a small town is only an illusion, everyone seems to know what everyone else is doing at all times, very hard to keep a secret and in a city its easy to be anonymous.

I suppose you have an understanding of the difference between rural and urban life. A rural community is usually not very large but a well-knit and inter-dependent group of people leading usually a contented life. Whereas, urban life is totally different where people are usually holed-up in their apartments and residents living in a building or even a floor may not know each other. In this context, everyone appears to be anonymous!
Hope the above narration gives you some idea of why we have a high degree of anonymity in city life compared to life in a village!

Think about it, when was the last time you really connected with someone at a crowed night club. But say you are at a small dinner party.....you could have meaningful conversations with 2 or 3 people in one night. Its just like that, only the city is the night club and the country is a small party. I've lived in both and opt for the small party myself.

Usually with a population increase you also have a crime increase and it is hard to keep up with a changing population moving into urbanism. The old back yard isn't as safe as it used to be.

Far more people. Much higher population density. Therefore, in rural areas, you become familiar with everyone that you meet, because you see them again and again. In urban areas, you see different people every day, and therefore do not become familiar with anyone, nor could you possibly have the memory capacity to know about everyone.
