You can get your proof on film or video, but it will be much more effective if you have a court order against him before hand. First you go to a lawyer and explain that your ex is vandalizing your car, and you want a court order that says he has to stay at least 100 feet from your house, your car, and you. You may have to appear before a judge and explain, but if so it would just take a few minutes. Just be completely honest.

Then when you catch him on video, you show it to the police and they arrest him for violating the court order.

I find that if you put a doberman on a lengthy cord tied to a door handle you don't have anybody bothering your car. I leave mine like that with the windows down and keys in it and it has never been touched.

Somehow plant a video camera that can be aimed at your car. When he comes by to do it again, you will have him on tape. Try hiding the camera in the bushes.
