It's impossible. When you open your mouth, your eyes are more wide open which allows for proper application of mascara.

The explanation is a little tricky, so just bear with me for a minute or two.
When the mouth is opened, the depressor angulioris pulls down on the orbicularis oris which in turn pull down the levator lobii superioris, oloeque nasi, levator lobil superioris, zygomaticus minor, zygomaticus major which in turn open the eyes wider and flare out the lashes on the eyelids making for easier and more accurate application of mascara.
It's sorta what you guys do when you shave the upper lip area. Does that help?

Here's one though, Why can't most women feed a baby without opening there mouths like they are taking a bite?

opening the mouth allows the face muscles to stretch, making your eyes and lashes further apart, in turn making it easier to evenly apply mascara and not get any on your face.

Because we usually have to tip our heads a bit so that we can make sure to get under the lash. It just doesn't feel right if you have your head tipped and you mouth closed tight.

i would ask something simmilar "why cant woman put lipstick on with their mouth closed?"
i dont put mascara with mouth openned Oo i think that why my mascara looks sux!!!!

Maybe it has to do with the optic nerve acting like a purse string. Kind of like if you put pressure on the tendons on the inside of your wrist, your fingers move. Just kidding, good question.

my boyfriend asks me the same question all the time.. .i have no clue why.... i wonder myself why we can't. i catch myself everytimeim doing it, try to close it, and realize by the end it is back open. balances the face maybe? haha i don't know. sorry. its a mystery
