When I enable WEP my connection is lost (although I can still connect my laptop to the router with no security). I am using the correct SSID. I have tried it several times but it keeps disconnecting when I enable WEP. Thanks in advance for any advice.

While most of the above answers provide correct information, there are other considerations as well. For example, are all your network devices configured with the same security key? Each has to be configured exactly the same or you will not be able to establish a connection.

WPA IS more secure, but it only works if all your devices support WPA and not all do yet, especially in older OSs. So, it is important to find out if all your hardware devices you wish to connect to your wireless network support WEP or WPA. It has to be one or the other, it can't be a mixture of the two different types. You can find out by calling the manufacturers of each device or looking it up in your owners manuals.

Now, if you do choose WPA you need to be sure your Internet Security Suite supports WPA too. If it doesn't it will keep you from connecting. I found out mine did not, so I had to reconfigure it to allow for the WPA. Which was simple done by removing the program then re-installing without the firewall. I love my Internet Security Suite, it is fantastic, and as my hardware firewall is stronger than any software firewall I use it instead. It is in the Routers Configuragion Page, which you know is accessable through the Web browser.

To set for either WEP or WPA you first need to remove the Adapter and Adapter configuration utility and drivers. Which you do just by going into Control Panel, selecting Add/Remove and then removing the Adapter software. Then set the security in the Router. Then go back and re-install the Adapter software following each step of instructions, and putting the Adapter in when promted. Then you will be instructed to put in the Key used in the Router. So, keep that Key in a safe place so you don't lose it.

It is also important for you to set a Password in your Router Setup Page. This significantly increases security. You don't want anybody but you getting into your Routers Configuration. A password will keep others out.

This is not really that difficult. If you decide on the better security option of WPA just ensure each hardware device you attach to the Network is compatable with WPA and make sure your Internet Security Suite is as well. My security suite kept me offline until I discovered the firewall it contained was not compatable with WPA. But, WPA IS the better choice, it is much more difficult for crackers to get in and do all types of nasties with your network.

Just remove the Adapter software and the adapter, set the Router Key, re-install the Adapter software and then the Adapter when instructed, then put in the same Key used in the Router when prompted. You will then be connected. Please keep your Key in a safe place where ohers won't find it and you won't lose it or you will not be able to connect and have to reset your Router back to factory specs. Something you don't really want to have to do.

If none of the above works, you need to reset your Router to Factory Specs and start all over again. I had to do this once too. It just means you start over again fresh, as though you had not done any setup yet. Configure the Router first, then install the software, follow instructions, put in the Adapter when instructed. Easy when you have worked on these for a while. I use Wireless both at home and at my office.

Good luck in configuring your security and getting back Online. Have a nice day!

You need to apply the same WEP key to the wireless configuration on every machine on the network. No WEP key = no connection, and that's how you want it!

Did you enter the WEP key into the laptop. When you enable security, it won't connect until you have entered the security key.

after enabling WEP have you then configured your wireless device to use WEP?

My suggestion is to remove the configuration on the device, change teh router and then re-connect.

If possible use WPA, its more secure than WEP and has greater performance.
