It is about 4 or 5 cms long and was found on a weed among the foxgloves. It is black and about 1cm in diameter. On it's "head" it has two markings which look like big eyes and under that it has a marking that looks like a big smily mouth! It looks kind of like a cartoon!! It has no horns or stripes.
Can anyone identify it for me please? I have checked in my nature books but it doesn't seem to be there.
I found it in my garden in the south of England.

I would probably have to agree with prosopopoeia and say it's a type of swallowtail butterfly. It's definitely not a Monarch, since they tend to be black, white and yellow stripped. You said it has no horns or strips, but does it have any spots or any markings? Does it have any hairs? Does it have any other colors? What color are the eye patterns? and are they actually on the head or the back?
