Man Strat, this is a tough question, to be so simple. I love Bird and I love Trane. But if I had to choose one, I'd have to choose Trane, because his music had more depth, and he has been equally as responsible for growing jazz music as Bird has. Trane also was a much more dedicated musician than Bird. Although, I'd have to say that Bird is still the most talented jazz musician ever. I play his music for people who never heard it, and they think it's someone who is contemporary. It's still fresh.

Why choose, Listen to the both of them. There's absolutly no reason to restrict yourself so knock yourself out & buy as much of their stuff as you can get. A word of advice, If you like music where you can follow the tune, avoid post '65 Coltrane. There's nothing wrong with it if you like that kind of stuff but it's really hard work to listen to.
