When I start my computer it runs Windows Fax Installer - when I try to stop it, (cancel) it gives me an error code of 1706 "no source can be found for product fax". Also, when I open my browser it trys to install! Is this a virus? How would you recommend to remove it?

By booting the ubuntu live CD and clicking on the Install icon.
I had similar problems before. It helps, believe me.

If it's a virus, get norton or Mcaffee. If not, go to start, click on run, type in MSCONFIG a window will open, click the tab that says startup, uncheck the box that says windows fax installer and restart your computer. Check the box that says don't show this message again and that should solve the problem.

Right click a blank portion of your task bar (at the bottom of the screen where the start button and clock reside.) Click on Task Manager then the Processes tab. Look for Windows Fax Installer, highlight it, then click End Process.

This can be a Virus or you might have an un completed Installation attempt of this software ... Some components were installed while others missing if so You need the CD from where this was installed to remove it.

Or if not so this might have came with some email or Link....
Go to Add remove programme & remove this from there

Look in your startup folder. Also download Registry Cleaner or CCleaner and look for Windows Fax in the startup section.
