the new ram has to be the same type, i.e. sdram, edo, ddr, rhimbus, etc. it also has to be the same clock speed and if your computer is an older one it may be using pc66 memory. try buying the same type and brand off ebay as the one u are upgrading. also, computers only have a max amount of ram u can add. go to the computer maker's web site and look in support and try to download a user's manual that will say what type of ram u have and the clockspeed and the max ram u can use. if u are upgrading the memory in an older pc, the above is probably the problem and tech support or replacing with the same type is tghe answer. u can buy used ram cheap off ebay if u know what u need, first! used ram is safe as ram usually doesnt go bad.

Ton of stuff you have to make sure of before you just plug it in. Why doesn't it work or is supported? It's the way the technology was made.
To explain your why: think of a TIRE. How many kinds of tires are there? Bycicle tires, motorcycle tires, truck tires, car tires....
can you really just grab whatever and stick it wherever?
Yeah, you can't do it with RAM either.

You're producing compatibility issues...all your RAM slots should have the same type of RAM installed.

It depends on the motherboard...sometimes you have to have the same type of RAM in all slots.
