I can't get my head around this. In my country a red light means you stop no matter what. It doesn't make any sense to be able to go even if it's on red, what if something is coming? Isn't half the point of traffic lights because it's too dangerous to see for yourself if you can go or not?

The rule is supposed to be that you can turn right on red as long as there is no traffic coming. The problem that I've seen is that people treat it as "turn right on red even if there's traffic coming but you think you can make it in time". I don't know how many times I've had someone turn right at a red light right in front of me when I'm at an intersection.

Where it gets confusing is when I travel to other areas...in the U.S. and abroad and don't know what the rules are there. I've erred on the side of caution and not turned but then I've ticked off people who are behind me.

You do have eyes right? If you can't see for yourself the other traffic...GET OFF THE ROAD. It's the same as a road without a light just a stop sign. A red light always means stop but a blinking red is like a stop sign. Stop look both ways and proceed if traffic is clear. A blinking red is usually for left hand turns if there is too much traffic then you wait for a green arrow to go so the other traffic stops.Right hand turns are also allowed on red except where posted because of too much oncoming traffic but you have to come to a complete stop and check for cars first. However, my town is known for it's not quite a complete stop STOPS. LOL...also being a small town after a certain time at night most of our lights blink red from one way and yellow for caution from the other. it's just like using a stop sign. common sense stop then proceed if the traffic is clear if not wait....if you don't want to make a right on red you can always wait for it to turn green and piss off the drivers behind you. plus if too much traffic is coming duh wait for green.

traffic lights are to regulate traffic mainly for people going straight or left. Taking a right on red is not dangerous as long as no one is coming. People are tending to "yield" and not stop at red lights, which can really be dangerous, but if they obeyed the law the right way it is not dangerous. Some lights do say " no turn on red" if the intersection is dangerous and difficult to see who is coming. I think that it is a great idea that keeps traffic going better.

Even where "right on red" is allowed, you must still come to a complete stop (like a stop sign), look both ways, and procede with caution. Obviously, if you can't see oncoming traffic, its not a safe place to make a "right on red" maneuver.

"Right on red" was designed to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic, so that lines at the stop light could be shortened, where it is safe to do so. You'll find that most places where it is unsafe to make a right on red have a posted sign that says "no turn on red."

It's a common sense issue. Drive in a manner that is appropriate for the conditions, and you'll be fine.

You are allowed to turn right on red after you stop and make sure nothing is coming. You can also turn left on red if it is on a one way street . As before, you must stop and make sure nothing is coming. Makes sense that if nothing is coming why sit through a red light? Red lights are just for the equal distribution of traffic anyway.

Its right on red only after a full stop. It's like a stop sign all other traffic has the right of way you can turn right if its clear. This frees up traffic jams. most states allow this but as far as I know in NY you have to have a sign that allows you to turn on red and normally its no turn on red if there is no posting.

If there is nothing coming from the other direction, why should you have to wait? Just to burn more gas while waiting for the light to turn green? Most people who make a right on red look to see if anything is coming first, and many intersections are clearly marked no right on red.

No, the point of traffic lights is to regulate the flow of traffic and allow everyone to go in their respective directions, in turn.

You're expected to have the sense not to proceed if you see another vehicle coming and wait for the light to turn green.

When making a right turn against a red light, the law says you must stop and look first.
