If you mean a household water heater tank, the outside heat is not a problem. However, wall paint will not stick for long. Spray paint is enamal, the rustoleum will do a good job.

It's not bad you covered it with wall paint, it was just a waste of time. When you have to use the radiators, the paint will begin to flake off. You need to use a paint designed to withstand the higher that normal heat.

There is no real problem. However, the wall paint was not made to bond to metal and may peel in time.

I have never done this myself, but have seen them do it on home improvement shows. They used a paint for high heat... Lowes or Home Depot would be able to tell you for sure

Good Luck
