A research paper about Children who are deaf and the obstacles they face would be interesting and you could learn a lot from it, especially because they acquire some sign language skills earlier than hearing children, but written language and regular sign language (like ASL) isn't formally taught to them, it is picked up at school and from other members of the deaf community.
I had a friend whose parents were deaf, and he was a hearing child. he learned the language from the television. They kept it on 24-7, and had him spend a lot of time with other hearing relatives and neighbors.
Either would be a narrow enough topic for a good paper.
