You need to be on the inside lead. to do this try using your inside rein while squeezing with your out side leg

you need the inside lead like everyone has said. i think you know this though and are having problems figuring out which is inside and which is outside. it won't matter which style of riding you are using...it's the same either way.

the easiest way to figure out which one to pick up is to figure out which way the horse is going to turn. if you turn to the right, then the right lead needs picked up...if you turn to the left, then the left lead needs picked up. this helps keep them balanced going into the turns and keeps them cantering smoothly.

To tell if they took the correct lead you should be able to look down and see which front shoulder moves first. If it isn't the correct one, just simple go back to a trot, wait a beat and then ask again until they get it right.

I practiced telling which lead was which by doing circles in the direction I wanted to turn so they would naturally take the right lead and then learning the looks of the shoulders leading correctly.

Good luck

inside lead. an outside lead is called counter cantering and can be ubalancing for the horse
to pick up the inside lead bump w/ your outside leg and squeeze w/ your inside.
if your horse gets the wrong lead go back to the trot and try again or learn a flying lead change
have some1 tell you when you are on the correct lead and see what it looks like. you should see the inside fore leg going forward

learn a flying lead change:
requirements:
your horse has to be able to canter as soon as you ask for it
your horse has to move well off your leg

start w/ a ground pole: canter your horse in a figure 8 and as you come over the ground pole squeeze w/ one lef and give hard kick w/ the leg oppositte of the lead you want to pick up. when you get good at this leave the ground pole out

When a horse canters, he steps first with his outside hind, then with his inside hind and outside front together, then with his inside front. These are the three beats you will hear -- followed by a "moment of suspension" that is quiet.

So if you are tracking left, on the left lead, you should see his left front leg come out further forward and later. If you are tracking right, on the right lead, you should see his right front leg come out further forward and later.

Have you ever tried "galloping" yourself, like kids do when they pretend to be horses? If you have your right foot in front, you are on your right lead. If you have your left foot in front, you are on your left lead.

The easiest way to get the hang of this is to watch other people ride. Ask them to show you the correct and incorrect lead, and watch their horse's legs. This will give you a better sense of how the leads work.

With practice, though, you should be able to get the correct lead by asking for the canter while your horse is balanced and quiet, and you will be able to feel whether you are on the lead without looking down.
