I think that a lot of science fiction shows are inspiration for inventors...On Star Trek for example, they used communicator devices that were the inspiration for cell phones, so even though we may never find a way to "beam" around to different places, I think we'll be seeing more "Trek-y" things in the future!
Great question by the way!

Watch "How William Shatner Changed the World". Discovery Channel plays it every few weeks. There are a few interviews with real scientist and inventors of many of today's technologies who say that watching Star Trek (the Original Series) influenced their discoveries and inventions. Now, add on all the new scientists who grew up watching TNG, DS9, Voyager & Enterprise, and who knows what the next SciFi toy we will see in every home!
No, the future will not be exactly like Star Trek. Mankind is driven by self preservation and greed. Always has and always will, making a ST future not possible. However, "Star Trek is an idealist medaphore of how the future could be"

There is a made for TV special circulating called "How William Shatner changed the world". It's narrated by William Shatner and is all about inventions and advancements in science that have been inspired by the original TV series "Star Trek". so..a lot of the "getting to live like Star Trek" stuff has already come to fruition...I'd say it's only a matter of time before it all does. There's an old saying..or adage or whatever you wanna call it that says (I'm paraphrasing) "If man can think it...man can do it".

No.
To live and work in space, there will have to be ways to protect humans from radiation. We can do that now, however not for extended periods of time. That's one of the biggest challenges facing NASA as we prepare to go to Mars.
Also the distances are nearly beyond comprehension. Saturn, for example, is 1 billion miles away. It takes about 7 years to get there. Mars would be a 6 month ride, one way!!!
Other galaxies are out of the question. They are so far away, their distances are measured in "light years". A light year is the DISTANCE light travels in one year. The Andromeda Galaxy is the farthest object that can be seen with the naked eye (in a VERY dark location). It is 250 million light years away, meaning we see it now as it was 250 million years ago. If it were to vanish right now, we would not know it for 250 millions years!!
The last restriction is speed. If you can go faster, it doesn't take as long, right? Yes, but "warp" speed will not be possible.
According to Einstein's theory of relativity, if matter reaches the speed of light (186,000 miles per second) it becomes energy. Simply stated, anything moving that fast will be destroyed.
I hope this helps. I know it's long, but I love this stuff!!!

It all depends on if we can develop a way to travel through space at a reasonable speed. If we are to get anything near like the Star Trek universe, we need faster-than-light travel or some kind of warp technology. Otherwise we will just be stuck in our own boring solar system forever.

Do you mean constantly involved in intergalactic conflicts with other alien races that we can't get along with because, despite our best efforts with things like "Prime Directives," we still manage to antagonize people whether we mean to or not?
Heck, I'd say we're already living like that today. Except for the intergalactic part.
If you mean will we have replicators and transporters and ships that can travel faster than light, well, I wouldn't count on the last one. I think the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle makes the other technologies a little hard to believe too, but I'm willing to be a bit more optimistic on those. :)

I'd like to think so, one day, but I think that there will be a drop in the human population before this happens... Just like in Trek, we had world war III that resulted in the death of billions... that might be what's needed before people pull together and realize that we are our own worst enemy.
Let's hope we can get to like TNG and DS9 and not that crappy Voyager or Enterprise..

Ultimately, no. That's because much of the technology depicted is purely fictional. We will never have warp drive, transporters, and replicators (as depicted on the show). Sure, someday we may reach out to the stars...but travel between them will take years, not days or hours as seen on the show.

500 years ago ships went from europe to the new world. Maybe 500 years from now ships will go from earth to another new world. A galactic neighborhood with lots of alien races? Probably not. You might find some bacteria, but not much conversation.

((is this how the scripts for Shatner were written?))
