Could be as simple as no grease in all the fittings. Each oil change you should be having it lubed as well.
Any local Jiffy Lube can offer this service and should be included with any oil change.
If not that it can be ball joints, T-rods, etc. If it these parts they are your main components of the front steering. If they fail when driving you will wreck 99% of the time. As the wheel will come off or break back or something similar.
Have a mechanic check it out prior to your trip or your trip might not be far at all.

Squeaks are the sound of poor maintenance. There are a number of things that it could be. Your 99 Explorer could just have dry bushings in the front end. Some of the possible culprits are the sway bar bushings, the shock bushings, etc. Ball joints and shocks generally do not squeak, but they cannot be ruled out either. This forum is not the place to get a definite answer about the safety of delaying the repair. Have someone physically inspect the car and make that determination. That should be done prior to a road trip anyway. Sorry, but these are the facts.

You Suspension is at fault here. You should get the Rubber Bushes Replaced OR greased, as soon as possible. And PLEASE do it before the Trip. It could lead to a potential accident. Better Safe than Sorry! The Bushes are not very expensive and it's hardly an hour's job for a '99 Ford Explorer. Take my advice on it!

Ok, besides just buying a Chevy next time, you should go to a auto shop that does free estimates and tell them that you dont have the money to do it until you get back. Make sure to sound like you will go to them for sure when you get back from your trip. If they look at your car, know you are going on the trip, and let you go, you can go without worrying. If they flip out and say that you need to do it now, you probably should. Good luck.

sqeaking noises when going over hums or turning can be caused by lower wish bone bushes which are worn out or pull rod bushes. What you need to do is only to check your suspension rubber bushes. They wear out causing the squeaking noise due to rubbing of the rubber and metal susrfaces.
