Stereotyping, like so many other forms of social abuse, should not be allowed in today's advertising campaigns. However, it will continue until enough victimized individuals form large enough groups to initiate a political action committees and fight it in the media. Example, women have been exploited sexually in adverting for many years, as have blacks and other minorities have suffered racial stereotyping. These groups have been actively fighting back and gaining ground. Proof of it can bee seen in ads of late. The wicked finger of advertising is now pointing at white males, making them the latest group to be targeted and portrayed as bumbling idiots, nerds and geeks, ignorant rednecks, and generally incompetent fools who need to be directed and straightened out by women and minority figures. Women and blacks are now portrayed to be smarter, more in-control, and competent directors of white male fools who can't seem to get it together. Just watch ten commercials tonight and you'll see what I'm talking about. It will really make you sick. But, nothing will change until white males, and all other groups of targeted individuals, say collectively, "ENOUGH" and demand that it stops. They must be willing work together to apply political pressure as needed to bring about change and end stereotyping of any group by the advertising industry.

I agree. Stereotyping although frowned upon is the way that EVERYONE makes sense of the world. Nothing wrong with it as long as you try to give people the benefit of the doubt before going off of stereotypes.

Stereotyping is very frowned upon in advertising;the goal is always "broadtyping", if you are going to pay a half-million dollars for an ad, you want EVERYONE to like it.

It's also still big in comedy. Most comics use it to great extent. You can almost say anything as long as you say "just kidding".
I think it's also a sure sign of media control in our society. We as a people follow most things we see or hear. If you go against the norm, you're labeled a racist or sexist and it's not true. In fact, I've found that going against stereotyping is often more biased than not. People just say what they've heard and no thought goes into it. WE ARE FOLLOWERS!

You should explain your question further. For example, what advertisement stereotypes are not frowned upon.

Because advertising poses stereotyping itself and therefore puts the positive things on doing so on the limelight.

because it shows that the person does not have lateral thinking and is devoid of fresh ideas & innovative thinking. In advertising a
successful model indicates preferences of large no. of people and hence may be successful, if replicated.

Great question, I loved it. You are so right but it has to appeal to everyone and it is better to target everyone and offend a few than target a few and offend most.
