As I understand it, it's an naval experiment to make ships "invisible" to magnetic mines by use of a magnetic field generated on board a naval ship. Popular misconceptions have it that the experiment sought to make ships invisible.

Mark C: Wikipedia cheaters to me are people who find articles and copy & paste them directly, like YTechnoamitg just above. If you can't put what you understand from these articles in your own word, just a simple link would do. There's absolutely no need to copy & paste a 50 paragraph article.

The so called Philadelphia experiment took place in the Norfolk naval yard early in World War II. Supposedly in a top secret plan it involved wrapping electromagnetic cables around the ship and then powering them up which would cause the ship to dissapear. Its nonsense. There have been books and articles and even a movie about it . All kinds of wild claims were made about how the crew went insane, etc. None of it is true. Surviving crew members still laugh when they are asked about it.

The story is that the US navy conducted an experiment to make a ship invisible, and that it went wrong, causing the ship to genuinely disappear from Philadelphia harbour during World War II.

The US Navy denies this, possibly to cover up that they really found a way to make their ship invisible, or more likely because it's a load of old cobblers. There's a 1984 movie based on the story.

by combining intense magnetic fields into a united phase, theory was that light could be bent thus making the object invisible, much the same way as a black hole in space is believed to behave. An experiment was carried out on USS Philidelphia and it went badly wrong as previously described here.

Maybe it's a test run to see what it would be like "without" gun violence.
