Every pet (other than a pet rock, or maybe sea monkeys) is expensive if taken care of properly. The idea that small animals are inexpensive stems from the fact that not enough people bother to take them to the vet, or buy them toys to keep the occupied, or the right food or bedding or cage size.
I would have to guess that the most expensive pets are rare/long living parrots, dogs, and horses.

Elephant.
The Los Angeles Zoo is building a $39 million habitat for its two remaining elephants.
This amount of money is twice as much as would be needed to buy a Beverly Hills mansion sitting on the same size land.

A horse... they are often expensive to buy and can be quite expensive to care for, especially when they need a vet!

All of those little b*stards that cost more than $200 dollars. I can think of so many things better to do with my money than blow $1500 dollars on something like a Yorkie.
