The calf or sura is a pair of muscles—

the gastrocnemius and

soleus— at the back of the lower human leg.

The calf muscles are connected to the foot through the Achilles tendon, and contract to induce plantar flexion of the foot. They are used extensively in walking, jumping, and running.
