actually, you can buy a can of O-Ring conditioner, and it may stop your leak( for a while, not permently). I've used it in customers cars who can't afford to pay to have the system repaired. It works pretty well if your problem is only a leaking seal, anything other than that will require major work.
As to answer how to charge your system: Most parts stores sell a charge kit that comes with the gauge, line and refrigerant. I would suggest buying it and read the directions along with the can of O-ring conditioner. hope this helps!

Believe me it's too much trouble to do it yourself...... Take it in to a a/c shop. If you want to do it yourself... you will have to buy a a/c kit at a place like Walmart and buy the number of cans of the coolant that you will need. You have to know how Many to buy... The kit costs about $35 and the coolant costs about $10 a can.
This won't solve your problem because it is leaking somewhere in the a/c system. You are looking at a least an $800 job to get it fixed. Not at the Dealer.
Best of Luck to you.

I have the same problem with a '99 Durango. Cost to fix it....$1000!
It will cost somewhere around $100 to recharge, but depending on how bad it's keaking, it may only last a day or so!
Good luck!

if it is leaking the leak needs to be fixed. your a/c system is a closed loop system meaning it should never need to be re-charged. It is safer to have a professional do the maintance. I tried adding freon to my system and blew the overpressure valve. that is the only thing that saved my system. I thought that i had a leak because they a/c did not blow cold when my real problem was with my temp. door controller. LOL
