Sodium chloride is salt which will kill everything in your garden if you apply a lot (many oceanside plants do not do well because of the amount of salt in the environment).

There are many things that will kill everything in the garden including bleach, RoundUp, and anything else you apply to plants in a high enough concentration.

it is salt and salt that gets into your soil will make it unihabitable for plants of all types for a long time (if there is enough in there). use for sidewalk weeds, but keep out of the garden. The Romans used to sow salt into their enemies fields as a sort of classical age sanction on goods. It would ruin their crops for many years.

Do not use salt. You will spoil the ground for the future and it can leach out other places. Buy a soil sterilizer. The commercial ones will go away with time.

as has been said its salt, this has the effect of depriving the plant of water and killing foliage only, strong roots will remain, a better weed killer is glyphosphate, trade name round up, this is systemic so kills from the tip up and the plant dies totally, it is also safer for kids and pets as once it hits the earth it neutrolises, it only has an affect on plants with foliage

Sodium Chloride (Na-Cl) is common salt.

I think you're thinking of Sodium Chlorate (Na-Cl-O3), which is a non-selective herbicide.
