Bought a Transcend JetFlash JF V30 512 Mb . It failed the next day for no reason in particular. Windows was able to detect the drive (implied by the small icon on the taskbar) but it was unable to format it or open the "Removable Disk". A dialog popped up saying "Insert ........ in to g:"

I've heard that they can be ruined by powerful magnets and X-rays. I've had em sitting around for years with no problems. Why would you want to format the drive? It'll always be FAT32 and the best way to clean it is to simply delete everything. Your plug&play settings might be messed up, could be a bad drive, could be a bad USB port.

You might want to try running an error-check on the removable drive. It is possible for the data to be corrupted or mis-written just like with any hard drive. Hopefully the error-check will fix your problem. To run the error check, right click on your removable drive in Windows Explorer. Then click properties. Next, click on the Tools tab. Finally, click the Check Now button under Error-checking.

They are reliable to an extent. I carry my schoolwork on the one attached to my car keys, and have never had any problems. My teachers even let me turn it in if I don't have any CD-R's on hand at home. BUT, I will say I like to check on another computer to see if the file is on there and working properly(2 computers in home). It just insures that the file is deffinity on the drive, working, and safe. This doesn't mean that you are safe from magnets though. If any magnets get near the drive, you stand a good chance of currupting any data on it.

If it is VERY important files that need transfer, I suggest burning a data cd or dvd.

Please remember before you remove it you must "safely remove hardware" first... many people do not do this before removing a pen drive or usb device.. This will avoid corruptions to the disk...
