Force yourself to talk to people. make sure to keep your eyes OFF the ground! Smile and compliment people. Force yourself to walk with confidence and pretty soon you will have lots of it!
Know that no matter what other people think of you, that you are a cool person and their opinions dont make you who you are.

Find a group of other shy people...and then go out into the middle of the woods to shoot a documentary about an old legend that everyone thinks is fake, only to find that (holy crap!) its real...so running in a panic through the forest, you slowly but surely begin to assert your leadership and find your place amongst the group...after the monster kills off all the other members but you and that handsome other kid who saves you from the cliff in the last minute, you begin to grow the confidence that comes with constant book signings and news conferences on the experience....or you could just join a support group.

You just have to make the decision to be more outgoing. I was shy when I was a kid and my wife can not believe it. I am way more outgoing than she is and I am an instructor for the Air Force so I talk in front of groups all the time. It can be done. Make the decision and work on it. Once you figure out that no one will kill you for speaking out, you will build the confidence. (kill you was just an exaggeration by the way, people won't really do that for just going up and saying hi). :)

I used to be shy about talking to girls.
So when Kenny Schabow has a fear, he goes right into an awkward situation and makes something happen.
I went up to girls and started conversations with them... and now I find it very easy to make a girl feel comfortable and talk about anything.
The point is that you have to take some initiative. Sitting on your butt thinking 'I wish I could be more like ____ who can go and talk to people' won't get you anywhere. I had to realize that in order to get over it, I had to put myself in the situation.
Be calm, be open, try to relax.
Try practicing opening up to random people who it doesn't matter what they know, because you will never see them again. For example... a bus station or a bar in another city. It's very unlikely anything you say to them will get back to you to haunt you. So introduce yourself to a stranger and b/s with them for a while.
Hope that helps :)

get a job that forces you not to be. i used to be shy, i am still kinda, but i got a job working retail and that helped me with approaching people. now i have an office job and that is helping me with the shyness over the phone thing. if you force yourself to not be shy, you will not be anymore. it takes some time and encouragement.

I read in some book that if you walk 25% faster, and every time you talk to some one, look them in the eye, then you will become more confident. If you are confident then you aren't shy.

I used to be really shy until i started doing music and had to perform all the time in front of big audiences. got me right out my shell!
May not work for everyone though, but perhaps doing something that gives your ego a bit of a boost? dancing, martial arts etc etc..............other than that suggestion i dont know. :)
